Back Bay

March 17, 2023

The Upper Newport Bay Nature Reserve, or as locals call it, “The Back Bay,” is home to 1,000 acres of preserved wetlands and a handful of endangered species that attract scientists, nature lovers and everyone in between. This sprawling ecological reserve is the ideal place to drop anchor for a day during your spring getaway! Whether you’re kayaking, bird-watching, boating or swimming, you’re sure to have a shell of a time.

1. Get in Touch With Nature

The Back Bay has long been considered one of the most important ecological reserves on the California coast and is a key resource for more than 200 species of migratory birds. Bike or hike along the 10.5-mile Back Bay Loop to visit the Peter & Mary Muth Interpretive Center for exhibits and interactive displays about the unique ecosystem. On this path, you’ll also enjoy sweeping views of the bay’s calm waters!

2. Paddle in Paradise

Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) at Newport Aquatic Center or Pirate Coast Paddle Company to get up close to the Back Bay’s aquatic life. SUP yoga, moonlight paddles and glow-in-the-dark paddleboard tours are unique experiences to add to your trip!

3. Fun for the Whole Family

Looking for a kid-friendly place to stay? The Hyatt Regency Newport Beach caters to travelers of all ages with its lush grounds, three pools, outdoor fire pits and an abundance of family-friendly activities. Play a competitive game of shuffleboard, table tennis or volleyball on-property, then rent bikes (they’re free!) and explore the natural beauty of the Back Bay on wheels.
